You may have read in the New York Post or Daily News (see http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/nyc-crime/man-6-years-prison-250g-realty-scams-article-1.2846335) that the Mosque of Islamic Brotherhood (MIB) was one of several organizations bilked of huge sums of money by a phony real estate agent.
“We collected and saved the money of mostly poor people, while praying for an opportunity for growth and expansion, while real estate prices soared,” Imam Al-Hajj Talib Abdur-Rashid of The Mosque of Islamic Brotherhood Inc. said at Stern’s sentencing in Manhattan Supreme Court.
“He has negatively impacted not only our congregation of men, women and children, but also the community we have strived to serve and thus the city in which we live,” the cleric added. “He has devastated us all.”
We at ICNY have worked with Imam Talib and everyone at the Mosque of Islamic Brotherhood for years. In this photo accompanying this post, the mosque welcomed public school teachers from our 2016 NEH Summer Institute on teaching religious diversity in public schools. We serve as a witness to this mosque and its members’ peace-loving practice of faith, and their steadfast commitment to social justice for all people. Their presence and their work has always been of benefit to all New Yorkers, and they deserve our support at this difficult time.
