Message from ICNY Executive Director
Dear Friends,
March is Women’s History Month. In our upcoming blog from Aisha Rahman, Esq. Executive Director of KARAMAH: Muslim Women Lawyers for Human Rights, you will learn about her struggle to reclaim her scripture and tradition. Aisha’s mother told her that her name-sake, one of the Prophet’s wives, was a scholar who taught the companions of the Prophet for 44 years after his death and narrated over 2,000 hadith. Watch for the blog in early March.
You will also see among these e-announcements several events connected to the 60th United Nations Commission on the Status of Women that will take place in New York at the UN headquarters from March 14-24. Bridging the Faith and Feminism Divide, Human Trafficking as a Form of Violence Against Girls and Women, and Unbind and Let Go: Mobilizing Faith Communities to Combat Human Trafficking are just some of the side events that faith-based NGO’s are sponsoring. On Sunday, March 6, the Baha’i Center of New York offers a public celebration of International Women’s Day, which will be observed nationally on March 8th.
On the subject of ending hate, in its effort to combat religious and racial intolerance nation-wide, the Southern Poverty Law Center released its updated list of hate groups around the country. To see the names and locations of these groups please check their interactive map here. This is a resource for New Yorkers and others working for pluralism and democracy in neighborhoods and around the nation.
Best Wishes,
Rev. Chloe Breyer
