PROGRAMS FOR LAW STUDENTS AND ATTORNEYS
Thanks to the support of Diane and Arthur Abbey, the Interfaith Center of New York has proudly worked in partnership with New York Law School since 2019, to provide classroom and community-based religious diversity education programs for law students and practicing attorneys.
Together ICNY and NYLS are helping to ensure equal access to justice for members of minority faith communities, by training attorneys to work effectively with religiously diverse clients. Over the course of our collaboration, we have provided religious diversity training to over 2,500 NYLS students, many of whom are now in practice, and provided both legal and diversity education to over 500 additional program participants (including attorneys, faith leaders, civic officials, and community members) through our continuing legal education programs and congregation-based workshops. Our partnership reflects a shared commitment to the civic life of New York, a shared goal of empowering diverse New Yorkers, and a shared belief that religious pluralism enriches the lives of all Americans.
In the words of NYLS Dean and President Anthony W. Crowell: “The Interfaith Center of New York has offered annually a best-in-class set of programs on lawyering and religious diversity for the NYLS community. Our work with ICNY has been incredibly valuable to our students and to NYLS as an institution, [especially] given the ongoing crisis in the Middle East which implicates many issues of religious and national identity, antisemitism and Islamophobia, and human dignity.”
In addition to workshops and community service opportunities for NYLS students, ICNY and NYLS have collaborated on a series of continuing legal education conferences and webinars, serving practicing attorneys in New York City and beyond. Alongside our work with NYLS, ICNY has offered religious diversity trainings to a wide range of clients and partners including the New York City Law Department. We stand ready to collaborate with law firms and legal service organizations, to develop lawyering and religious diversity programs that speak to your organization’s distinctive needs and concerns.
