Free Legal Clinic Gets Underway

October 11, 2011 ICNY

The Interfaith Center of New York, the New York State Courts Access to Justice Program, and the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) are launching the “Free Legal Clinic” (FLC), an initiative to bring free civil legal consultations to needy New Yorkers.  FLC is a mobile team of New York State attorneys and court clerks that can travel into each borough and provide free legal consultations to those in need. Legal counseling will be offered in the areas of domestic violence, child custody and visitation, consumer debts (including bankruptcy/foreclosures) landlord/tenant issues, divorces, and immigration (including “U” Visas for immigrant victims of domestic violence).

The long-term goal of the project is to bring the Free Legal Clinic to communities across New York City on a regular basis. The first phase will take place Monday through Friday, October 24-28, at the following locations. Please note that appointments to meet with an attorney must be scheduled in advance by calling Kevin Childress at (212) 870-3547 or sending email to kevin@interfaithcenter.org.

Some public talks and demonstrations will be added at a later date, and will be posted when available.

Monday, Oct. 24: Our Lady of Good Counsel church in Staten Island.
Tuesday, Oct. 25: Upper Room Baptist Church in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn.
Wednesday, Oct. 26: Youth Ministries for Peace and Justice, in the Bronx.
Thursday, Oct. 27: Interfaith Harmony and World Peace, in Jackson Heights, Queens.
Friday, Oct. 28: St. Mark’s in the Bowery, in the East Village of Manhattan.
