NYBR Statement on Recent Attacks of Women in Israel

January 1, 2012 ICNY

Filed Under: New & Noteworthy Tagged With: Israel, Joseph, NYBR, Potasnik

“The Torah’s ways are ways of pleasantness, and all its paths are peace.” (Proverbs 3:17)

As leaders of a rabbinic organization that broadly reflects the diversity of the Jewish people, we are horrified by the cruelty and intimidation perpetrated by Jewish extremists against Israeli women and girls on the streets of Beit Shemesh and on public buses. We condemn these activities in the strongest possible terms.

Acting in the name of Judaism, these self-appointed enforcers of the Jewish value of modesty have distorted this tenet and sullied our heritage. The inherent dignity of every human being is a foundational principle of the Jewish faith, and this principle has been violated.

We recognize that the perpetrators are not representative of the broader Hareidi (ultra-Orthodox) public, and we commend all those organizations and leaders who have raised their voices in protest. Still, we call upon ultra-Orthodox leaders to express their outrage with the same passion that is brought to bear whenever they feel God and Torah have been desecrated.  This is a moment of truth; ongoing vigilance is vital  and must be coupled with education of the public to prevent further Chilul Hashem, desecration of God’s name.

As steadfast supporters of the Jewish and democratic State of Israel, we fully support Israeli law enforcement agencies as they work vigorously to remove the threat of these dangerous individuals.

These disturbing incidents should give all segments of the Jewish community pause to reflect on how we can work together more assiduously to create a Jewish communal environment of understanding and respect.

With deep concern for the unity of our people,

Rabbi Yaakov Kermaier

NYBR President

Rabbi Joseph Potasnik

NYBR Executive Vice President
