On Tuesday, March 6, 2012, Interfaith Center staff met with students and faculty from Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina who are spending spring break in New York City, organized by the university’s Lilly Center for Vocational Reflection. The students learned about The Interfaith Center’s programs building civic connections, providing opportunities for religious leaders to learn about issues that affect their communities such as immigration and domestic violence, teaching about religious diversity, and supporting interfaith relationship-building in both neighborhood-based programs and internationally. The students had just visited the 9/11 Memorial prior to meeting with ICNY staff Dr. Henry Goldschmidt, Director of Educational Programs, and Annie Rawlings, Director of Outreach and Program Administration. They were interested to learn about the 2011 Prepare New York initiative in which New Yorkers came together during a time of continued grief and healing: to hear and share reflection; and for education, discussion, and collaboration. The conversations promoted peace among the city’s residents by celebrating religious pluralism, and by building interpersonal connection.
