The high school students in ICNY’s “Debate in the Neighborhood” continue to hone their debate skills in preparation for the first program-wide debate on April 9 and 10. This weekend, students at the Jamaica Muslim Center met to practice debate techniques. In other Queens communities, students from the Hindu Temple Society of North America in Flushing, and the Sikh Cultural Society and Gurdwara in Ozone Park, are also meeting once a week, all under the tutelage of Aditi Naik, a trainer from the International Debate Education Association (pictured below).

A collaboration of ICNY and the International Debate Education Association (IDEA), and funded by Open Society Youth Initiative, Debate in the Neighborhood aims to engage immigrant and first-generation students in the enriching educational tradition of debate, and to foster understanding, cooperation, and a free and lively exchange of ideas among young New Yorkers from diverse cultures, ethnicities and religious traditions.
