Press Release: Faith Letter to Mayor Eric Adams inviting him to a dialogue on his plan to Close Rikers

Letter to Mayor Eric Adams from 80 plus faith leaders representing New York City’s diverse religious landscape inviting the Mayor to dialogue about his plan to close Rikers Island.

The letter calls for the Mayor’s “clear and unwavering” commitment to reduce incarceration, close Rikers and open Borough Based facilities by 2027 as per legislation passed by the City Council in 2019.

Signatories include such diverse voices as, Rev. Sharon White-Harrigan of Woman’s Community Justice Association (WCJA), Sunita Viswanath of Hindus for Human Rights, Imam Souleimane Konate of the Council of African Imams, and Rev. Adriene Thorne of the Riverside Church.
