From BLITZ: Bangladeshi clergies condemn attack on Buddhists

October 16, 2012 ICNY

The following was published today in Blitz, the comprehensive tabloid weekly. The article can be accessed here.

A large number of clergies and spiritual leaders [Ulema-Mashaikh] in Bangladesh in a statement have condemned the recent attack on the Buddhists temple and habitats at Ramu, Ukhia and Teknaaf are as well as Buddhist and Hindu temples at Patiya area in the country. They demanded proper investigation into this heinous acts and punishment to the real perpetrators and their patrons.

In the press statement, the spiritual leaders [Ulema-Mashaikh] in Bangladesh said, “We condemn in unequivocal language the recent inhuman violence perpetrated on the Buddhist temples and Buddhist habitats of Ramu, Ukhia, Teknaf and on the Buddhist and Hindu temples of Patiya. We firmly believe that no really pious religious person can commit such barbaric crime. It is our Faith that the whole mankind irrespective of nationality-religion-color-community is the progeny of same Father Hazrat Adam (Peace be upon him) and the same Mother Hazrat Hawa @ Eve (Peace be upon her). We the Ulema-Mashaikh (Clergies-Spiritual Leaders) of Bangladesh categorically reject communal and sectarian notion of any type of any quarter.

“The heinous crimes committed (at Ramu and above mentioned places) have shattered Bangladesh’s long standing heritage of inter-religious amity. The politics of blame-game following the shameful incident is harming our national image and facilitating the actual perpetrators to remain undetected.

“We are observing with grave sadness that though the righteous Ulema-Mashaikh & Islamic parties have full compassion and support to the victim Buddhists and Hindus yet some unwise persons and quarters are exploiting the incidents for flat propaganda against Islam and against the persecuted Rohingya community. We want and end to the hate campaign against Islam and the Rohingya.

“We are worried that the unfortunate incidents (at Ramu and above mentioned places) may be a part of any deep-rooted conspiracy. Failure to dig out and identify the actual perpetrators at the bottom of what happened, may encourage the conspirators to afflict more dangerous incidents which may cause irreparable harm to the country and the nation.

“We on behalf of the Ulema-Mashaikh of Bangladesh do hereby express our determination to join hands with all other believers in religions to foil and resist all evil attempts and ulterior motives of communal and sectarian divisive elements.”
