Resources for Catholic Muslim Partnership

October 26, 2012 ICNY

Both Islam and Christianity have rich traditions of social service, community action, and interfaith work. Drawing upon these commonalities, and funded by the GHR Foundation, the Interfaith Center of New York (ICNY) has conducted a three year pilot project to build collaboration between Catholic and Muslim service providers in New York City: The Catholic-Muslim Partnership in Social Services Project. ICNY’s goal was to develop neighborhood or borough-based projects carried out in partnership by Muslim social service groups and nearby Catholic Charities projects in the Bronx, Manhattan (Harlem), and Staten Island. While the projects differed from each other, they all incorporated dialogue on Catholic and Muslim teachings and community life, and they all built collaboration around specific social service needs in each borough.

This resource page showcases the Catholic-Muslim partnership projects in the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island, and provides information and resources for those who might be interested in developing similar partnerships. You will find information about the overall project, the partners, and descriptions of the collaborations in the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island. A separate section highlights the Interfaith Center of New York’s January 2012 Public Conference on Catholic-Muslim Partnerships. You will also find information about Catholic Social Teaching and Muslim Social Teaching. Additionally, we have included a list—in no way exhaustive—of print and online articles, books, videos, other organizations’ websites, and other information about Catholic-Muslim dialogue and partnerships around the country.
