The focus of next week’s Marshall Meyer Retreat for Social Justice is “Widening the Lens on Community-Police Relations” and will draw on the experiences of diverse religious leaders and civic officials living in New York, Glasgow, Barcelona, and Los Angeles, cities that share common demographics, security, and civil liberty challenges.
One panelist joining us to discuss “Policy Advocacy for Stronger Police & Community Relations” will be Shakeel Syed, Executive Director of the Islamic Shura Council, a federation of mosques & Muslim organizations serving more than half a million Muslims in Southern California.
Syed is a board member of the Los Angeles Council of Religious Leaders and also serves as an executive board member of the ACLU – Los Angeles. Syed speaks frequently at places of worship, institutions of higher learning, public agencies, and various organizations in the private and public sector both locally and around the nation. He also speaks to and is cited by national and international media on issues related to Islam and Muslims. Syed has received several awards from community organizations such as the Orange County Human Relations Commission and Clergy & Laity United for Economic Justice among others. Syed has double Masters in Sciences and Arts and has been living in Southern California for more than two decades with his wife and four children.
The Rabbi Marshall T. Meyer retreats are New York City’s main concourse for interfaith discussions about important social issues that communities face. To participate, please register by completing the registration form. Space is limited, so please hurry!
