The Interfaith Center of New York is concerned about Mayor Elect DiBlasio’s appointment of William Bratton as Commissioner due to his past support for the mapping Muslims project in Los Angeles. As an organization committed to fair treatment of all religious communities, ICNY expects Bratton to retain his own commitment to policing by “consent and cooperation” as he stated in 2007 when pressed by Muslim community organizations to abandon the mapping. We also expect him to uphold and fulfill Mayor Elect De Blasio’s strong campaign promises to end the abusive targeting of communities of color through stop and frisk practices.
“We police this city with the consent and cooperation of the community,” Bratton said in 2007, announcing his decision to abandon a mapping program. “We did not have that here, and we will not go forward with this program.”
