Message from ICNY Executive Director
Dear Friends,
We hope you had a good summer.
At ICNY we had a wonderful group of interns whose voices you will hear from in this newsletter. In addition, in August, Religion Dispatches reported on ICNY’s recently concluded NEH Institute on teaching religious diversity in K-12 schools. For those who are interested, please see the New York Times article and ICNY’s video of the Hindu Temple Ganesh Charturthi celebration last Sunday (Dr. Uma Mysorekar, President of the Temple, is an ICNY Board Member and Vice Chair). Finally, we weighed in on the importance of religious leaders taking part in community dialogue following the tragic death of Eric Garner at the hands of police in Staten Island. (For more information on community action relating to the use of excessive force, see the Communities United for Police Reform website).
Coming up on September 21st, the People’s Climate March will take place at Columbus Circle/59th St in what is looking to be the largest climate march in history (for more information click here). Following the march, ICNY is partnering with Union Theological Seminary, Green Faith, and the Cathedral of St. John the Divine to hold an interfaith service under the phoenix exhibit at the Cathedral. The service will feature musician Paul Winter and the puppets of Ralph Lee along with civic and religious leaders. The event is free and open to the public. Click here for more info.
Also the next day on Sept. 22, The Interfaith Center will be working with The Coalition to Transform Advanced Care, and The Plaza Jewish Community Chapel to present the 30th Rabbi Marshall T. Meyer Retreat for Social Justice: Harnessing Spirituality & Religion in End of Life Care. To RSVP and find out more, please click here.
Back at the office, we’re pleased to share that Kevin Childress, ICNY’s social media manager, was appointed as an Ambassador to the Parliament of the World’s Religions. Additionally, Kevin’s article on Islamophobia was recently featured in Killing the Buddha, an online magazine of religion, culture and politics.
Best Wishes,
Rev. Chloe Breyer
