Who Are the Sikhs? Uniform Justice, Jesse Jackson & The Interfaith Awards Dinner:ICNY’s E-Bulletin for June is Here

June 2, 2015 ICNY

Message from ICNY Executive Director

Dear Friends,

Please join us for this year’s 13th Annual James Parks Morton Interfaith Award Dinner on Monday, June 8th at 6:30 at the Tribeca Rooftop. This year’s honorees include Founder of Religion and Ethics NewsWeekly Bob Abernethy, Civil Rights leader and activist The Rev. Jesse Jackson, and Urban Planner James Venturi. The evening will feature Dean Obeidallah, a comic and social commentator on life from an American Muslim point of view. Come and enjoy a roof-top vista of downtown Manhattan and the company of friends and neighbors while supporting The Interfaith Center of New York’s work to make our city safe for religious diversity. Get tickets here.

Later this month on June 17th, the Social Work and Religious Diversity conference will mark a new phase in ICNY’s education programs for social service and mental health care providers.  We have now been accredited by the NY State Education Department as a continuing education provider for licensed social workers, and this year’s conference is booked with a growing wait list.  We’re looking forward to exciting conversations on June 17th that will help New York’s social workers understand the religious lives of the people they serve.

The Huffington Post recently published an article by Dr. Sarah Sayeed, ICNY Program Director for Community Development, about free speech and civility in the United States and in Islam. She is also profiled in Women’s Voices for Peace: Redefining Life after 40 in an article titled “Sarah Sayeed, a Woman Who’s Making a DIfference.”

Lastly, media has finally put a spotlight on the plight of the Rohingya of Burma, a Muslim minority living as an underclass in this majority Buddhist country. His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama has called on fellow Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi to speak out on behalf of the Rohingya. Buddhists from across the West are raising funds to support the Rohingya. Please join in supporting this multi faith effort.

Best Wishes,
Rev. Chloe Breyer
Executive Director
