(New York 10/28/15) the Majlis Ashura (Islamic Leadership Council) of New York, the largest Shura Council, expresses its concern at the dramatic increase in threats and attacks against American Muslims.
Recently, a 41 year old man was stabbed by two teenagers in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, NY, in front of his wife and 8-year old child and allegedly for speaking Arabic.
In recent days also, a member of the Muslim community and activist has received threats upon her life and family, including the disclosure of her home address by those making these threats.
“These types of threats and attacks strike at the very core values of what it means to be an American – that all of us are free to practice our faith without persecution. One shouldn’t have to constantly be worried about whether the next person you see will literally stab you to death for being who you are,” said Dr. Abdelhafid Djemil, president of the Council.
The Shura Council is taking seriously those threats and is communication with the authorities to find the best way of response. In the same time, the Council asks all members of the community to report any incident to the nearest precinct.
