A message for faith leaders from New York City Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn:
Dear Faith Leader:
Earlier this month, I sent a letter to the head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) asking them to change their regulations so that houses of worship can be eligible for disaster relief aid. As of today’s date, we haven’t gotten a response from FEMA on this issue.
Next week, at our Stated Council Meeting, the City Council will introduce a resolution calling on the United States Congress to introduce and pass legislation that would amend the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act to allow aid to be given to houses of worship affected by Hurricane Sandy on terms similar to other eligible private non-profit facilities.
A hearing on this resolution will be held on Thursday, February 7, 2013, at 10 a.m. in the 14th Floor Committee Room at 250 Broadway in Lower Manhattan.
We would very much like to have your input at this hearing. If you plan to come and provide testimony or if you would like to submit written testimony, please contact Kihani Brea at 212-788-5504 or kbrea@council.nyc.gov as soon as possible.
Thank you for all that you do on behalf of New Yorkers.
Sincerely,
Christine C. Quinn
Speaker
NYC Council
