ICNY is proud to share this upcoming event launched by Mika’il DeVeaux, a fellow in ICNY’s Interfaith Civic Leadership Academy (ICLA), sponsored by Trinity Church. ICLA is giving diverse religious leaders the tools they need to make a difference — with an intensive ten-month training program to develop civic engagement skills, as well as a rich network of relationships with colleagues across faith lines. In the final phase of the academy, our fellows receive grant funding to create their own community-based projects, applying the skills and insights developed in the program to address a social justice issue that impacts their faith community or other New Yorkers.
This pre-conference symposium is in advance of a larger working conference schedule for February 2019 at Columbia University with the goal of developing strategies that will increase awareness, fuel public discourse and galvanize momentum to amend the 13th Amendment of the US Constitution. Hyper-incarceration in the contemporary US has affected Americans of all races, ethnicities and classes. The symposium is for civic and faith leaders across New York City and will educated them about the historic and ongoing violations of human and constitutional rights that the Punishments Clause has made possible. The goal of this symposium is to have these faith leaders and communities take an active role in educating the public at large.
Date: Thursday, August 16 (Please RSVP Megan Cheah at mmc2237@columbia.edu no later than 2 August 2018)
Time: 9:30 am – 2:00 pm
Location: The Interfaith Center of New York, 475 Riverside Dr., New York, NY
