An actress, playwright, author, and teacher, Ms. Deavere Smith is a MacArthur Award winner and holder of the George Polk Career Award in Journalism, and has been twice nominated for a Tony award. Her most recent play, entitled Notes from the Field, looks at the vulnerability of youth, inequality, the criminal justice system, and contemporary activism.
