August 2013 Interfaith Center of New York E-Announcements
Dear Friends,
As the summer continues and Ramadan draws to a close, ICNY is proud to report that staff member Dr. Sarah Sayeed is being honored at this year’s Manhattan Borough President Iftar. Dr. Sayeed organized ICNY’s recent successful Rabbi Marshal Meyer Retreat on Police-Community Relations that featured law enforcement and religious leaders from NYC, LA, and two international cities. The final report from the retreat is available here.
The Rev. Chloe Breyer’s July article in the New York Daily News “Secretary Ray Kelly? Bad for US Muslims” argued that Commissioner Kelly’s practice of surveillance of houses of worship and his weak record on protecting civil liberties would make him a poor candidate for Secretary of Homeland Security.
This month in partnership with the Harlem Community Justice Center, ICNY is convening an interfaith dialogue on criminal justice issues with young New Yorkers training to serve on the Harlem Youth Court. On Thursday afternoon August 15th, Youth Court trainees will meet with Christian, Muslim, Hindu, and Yoruba/Lukumi religious leaders to explore faith-based perspectives on justice, punishment, and reconciliation.
Finally, a selection of photo highlights from ICNY’s 2013 Gala earlier this summer are available on ICNY’s YouTube channel, as are video clips of the interfaith blessings that began the evening, and the inspiring acceptance speeches by Sister Pat Farrell, Judith Davidson Moyers, Bill Moyers, C.T. Vivian and Russell Simmons.
