Join Habitat NYC for the Blessed Night Out!

May 23, 2013 ICNY

Thursday, May 30 – Friday, May 31
8:30 p.m. – 10 a.m.
City Hall Park

RSVP to attend
If you would like to participate in any part of this two-day advocacy event, please email buildlouder@habitatnyc.org and let us know what part of the event you would like to participate in.

Twenty-five years ago, more than 60 homeless men and women camped out in City Hall Park for 200 days to raise awareness of our city’s housing crisis. Today that crisis continues with skyrocketing homelessness, an astonishingly low vacancy rate, and more and more New Yorkers struggling to make ends meet under cripplingly high housing costs.

As a result of our collective advocacy, Mayor Bloomberg tackled these issues through the New Housing Marketplace Plan and is on track to complete the building and preserving of 165,000 units of affordable housing. Yet our next mayor will continue to face all of these housing challenges and more… so it’s up to all of us to ensure that our candidates plan on tackling these issues on day one. You can help in this effort by BUILDING LOUDER and taking part in this unique volunteer opportunity.

In partnership with the Interfaith Assembly on Housing and Homelessness

The event will begin with a candlelight vigil from St. Paul’s Chapel around the park and conclude with a press conference on the steps of City Hall at 9 a.m. The press conference will focus on calling the mayoral candidates to provide comprehensive housing plans that address the full continuum of housing need from shelter to homeownership.

Volunteer advocates are welcome to join in all or some of the night’s sleep-out. Police will be on hand for security and participants will be expected to bring their own sleeping bags, pillows, etc. Habitat NYC is also looking for a few dedicated volunteers to help collect signatures around the park for our Hammer & Pen Campaign throughout the day on Thursday.

Thank you for supporting Habitat NYC’s mission to build homes with low-income families and to unite all New Yorkers around the cause of affordable housing. When you BUILD LOUDER you help accomplish both of these goals.
