Mission & Ministry in Response to Hurricane Sandy from Trinity Wall Street Episcopal Church

November 16, 2012 ICNY

OPPORTUNITIES NOW

Brown Bag Program: We would like to expand the program to 5 days each week, Monday through Friday. The idea is for some lunches to be served at Trinity while others will be served at satellite sites.

Please help:

(1) Volunteers are needed to serve lunches both at Trinity and at satellite locations in the areas most affected (approximately 2-5 sites per day).  To volunteer or for more information, please contact Jenn Chinn at jcinn@trinitywallstreet.org.

(2) Volunteers are needed to pack lunches.  As is our usual practice, every Sunday at 1pm there will be an opportunity to pack lunches for the effort.  Additionally, next Monday (11/19/2012) and Wednesday (11/21/2012), between 12:45pm and 1:45pm, packing will take place on the 19th floor of 74 Trinity Place.  Beginning the week after Thanksgiving, there will be additional days for packing as needed.  Any group or company that would like to arrange a packing time other than those, please contact Bryan Parsons at bparsons@trinitywallstreet.org.

(3) Additional money is critical so please give to help sustain this program through the first of the year.  Food costs are $1000.00 per day per location.  If you or your group or company would like to sponsor a day, a week, a month, a location, or at any amount level, all money will go directly to feeding our neighbors.   To give or for more information, please contact Jenn Chinn at jchinn@trinitywallstreet.org.

Christ Church and St. John’s Church, Staten Island: Fr. Roy Cole, the Rector of St. John’s, is helping us coordinate our contribution to the efforts of both churches.

Please help:

(1) Volunteers are needed on Staten Island to help muck out a parishioner of St. John’s in Staten Island.  St. John’s parish was hardest hit by Sandy and needs small, organized, “mucking swat teams” to help families dig out and move back into their homes.

Saturday, 11/17

9am – Gather in the Seminar Room on the 2nd floor of 74 Trinity Place behind Trinity Church

4pm – Return to Manhattan

Many of our folks have been on mission and service trips through Trinity and have some experience with this type of work.  Jim Melchiorre will be advising the teams who go out for this work. Please contact Jenn Chinn at jchinn@trinitywallstreet.org to volunteer or for more information.

(2) Volunteers are needed on Staten Island to come out and help Christ Church sort through their donations (involves much folding on clothing and blankets) and distribute them to families in need.

Friday, 11/16

10am – Gather in the Seminar Room on the 2nd floor of 74 Trinity Place behind Trinity Church

4pm – Return to Manhattan

Their parish hall is currently filled to the brim with donations and they need to reclaim that space for church functions. Please contact Jenn Chinn at jchinn@trinitywallstreet.org to volunteer or for more information.

We will have more opportunities for sorting and mucking next week, before Thanksgiving, and bring some Brown Bags to offer those who are still without power and will have a hard time finding places to eat over the holiday weekend.

Collections: We will be polling our partners for “spot” collections.  As needs surface, we will put out a call to our community and gather the resources.  This keeps us in touch with our friends and aware of their needs as they will shift throughout the recovery effort.

Please help:

(1) Donate non-perishable foods that do not need to be heated to the lobby of 74 Trinity Place.

(2) Volunteers are needed to sort and organize donations that are received

(3) Help identify a group that is involved in leading a collection.

(4) Collection Connection: Coming soon!

Please contact Jenn Chinn at jchinn@trinitywallstreet.org to volunteer or for more information.

Relief Group Hosting and Hospitality: Given our proximity to the Staten Island Ferry, Trinity will be dedicating meeting space within the Parish for outside groups to connect with their members and each other in preparation for their relief efforts.  In addition, we will be providing some housing to augment their housing arrangements for their members.

(1) Volunteers are needed to be on-site at Trinity to provide welcome and hospitality

(2) Volunteers are needed to be “city guides” for those coming in from out of town.

(3) Help identify an out-of-town group that is involved in leading a relief effort and could use temporary housing assistance for its workers.

(4) Join in the efforts of one of these hosted groups

Please contact the Rev. Emily Wachner at ebloemker@trinitywallstreet.org to volunteer or for more informations.

UPCOMING OPPORTUNITIES:

PREPARATION AND PREVENTION: As part of a preparation and prevention response, the following education and formation opportunities are being organized:

(1) First Responder Training through the New York Disaster Interfaith Services (NYDIS)

(2) A discussion of the causes and effects of climate change and the stewardship of our environment as a spiritual practice.
