Inspired by the 2007 movie, “The Great Debaters” staring actor Denzel Washington, Scot X. Esdaile, President of the Connecticut State Conference and NAACP National Board Member created the “NAACP Great Debate series” in 2008. The debate series, which is one of a kind in the country, brings together highly acclaimed debate teams from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU’s) to compete against their Ivy League counterparts. The teams debate some of the most pressing social, cultural, and political issues of the day.
In 2013, the NAACP Great Debate series will achieve yet another first, when students from Howard and Columbia University will debate for the first time in New York City. This debate is especially unique, in that it will be held not on a college campus, but at First Corinthian Baptist Church, located in the village of Harlem. Admission is free.
