“On January 4, 2016, the US Department of Education sent [a letter] to school districts and colleges and universities nationwide. It reminds schools of their obligations under federal civil rights laws to prohibit discrimination based on actual or perceived race, religion, or national origin, and includes some suggestions to help schools maintain safe learning communities. It also encourages schools to take steps to foster welcoming and inclusive environments for students of different backgrounds and beliefs.
“You may want to contact educational institutions in your area to ensure that they received the letter and to offer assistance and support for activities that help to promote these important goals. If you do so, please keep us posted about your efforts.”
