Special Screening of the Documentary “An Encounter with Simone Weil”

September 18, 2012 ICNY

You are invited to a showing of the award-winning new documentary “An Encounter with Simone Weil” at the New York Society for Ethical Culture’s concert hall on Wednesday, Sept 19 at 7pm. The screening will be followed by a discussion with director Julia Haslett and Dr. Anne Klaeyson, leader of NYSEC.

Weil is widely considered to be one of the major Christian thinkers of the 20th century, once described by Albert Camus as “the only great spirit of our time.” She has been revered by popes, theologians, and politically-minded people of faith ever since her first book of spiritual writings, Gravity and Grace, was published over 60 years ago, yet she remains largely unknown. Since the film had its festival premiere over a year ago, it has been shown to packed crowds at a number of theaters and universities, and often sparks dynamic discussions on questions of faith, activism, and interfaith dialogue.

Earlier this year, Christianity Today chose An Encounter with Simone Weil as one of Six Indie Films You Won’t Want to Miss. And filmmaker Michael Moore awarded it the Special Founder’s Prize at his Traverse City Film Festival, calling it “a profound and moving film on a woman who continues to inspire all of us… An Encounter with Simone Weil challenges all of us not to look the other way when we see the suffering of others.”
