The Interfaith Center of New York condemns this morning’s attack in the subway tunnel under Port Authority—recognizing that while the physical injuries were minimal, this act of malice and cowardice threatens the fabric of public trust in a diverse city where 6 million of us ride the subway every day. We stand with those injured and shaken by this incident as well as the Bangladeshi community members who, like other New Yorkers ride to and from work and school and now face the burden of additional scrutiny and profiling risk because of the suspect’s national origin. We are grateful for the rapid response of law enforcement and first-responders and take to heart in the Mayor’s words about this city that, “. . . We are beacons to the world and we actually show that society of many faiths and many backgrounds can work, and we showed that democracy can work.”
