Please join us Monday, June 26 for ICNY’s 2023 James Parks Morton Interfaith Awards Gala. This year we are pleased to honor Imam Omar Niass with the #FaithJusticeHero award. Created in 2018, the #FaithJusticeHero award recognizes those working tirelessly throughout New York City to improve life for the poor, for immigrants, and for victims of abuse and neglect.

Imam Omar Niass, born in Kaolack, Senegal, hails from a lineage deeply rooted in Sufism, with his grandfather, the esteemed Baye Niass, revered for his profound influence. Before migrating to America in 2000, Imam Omar Niass taught the Quran in Senegal and Mauritania for 16 years.

In 2020, during the migrant crisis, Imam Omar recognized the pressing need for shelter and security among migrants, irrespective of their country of origin or race. He transformed his mosques into sanctuaries, providing sanctuary to over 1000 asylum seekers. In doing so, he became a sanctuary himself, offering solace and a safe haven for those in desperate need. The Imam’s remarkable impact on the lives of those he has encountered has established him as a beacon of hope. His dedication and hard work have inspired many seeking a better life, leaving an enduring legacy that will be felt for generations to come.

With his compassionate leadership and profound commitment to the welfare of others, Imam Omar Niass continues to exemplify the values of service and compassion.

Please join us Monday, June 26 for ICNY’s 2023 James Parks Morton Interfaith Awards Gala. This year we are pleased to honor Adama Bah with the #FaithJusticeHero award.

Created in 2018, the #FaithJusticeHero award recognizes those working tirelessly throughout New York City to improve life for the poor, for immigrants, and for victims of abuse and neglect.

Adama Bah came to the U.S. in 1990 at the age of two. She lived in the States and attended public schools. Then, at sixteen, her whole world changed. The FBI raided her apartment and handcuffed her, along with her father. She was detained and told she was “illegal.” Her father was deported. Adama was allowed to stay but forced to drop out of school and support her family. Now Adama tells her story to call attention to the plight of others like her. Adama is also the founder of Afrikana, advocating for those at the crosshairs of racial profiling, harassment, poverty, and those who are misinformed due to lack of resources. Afrikana aids in providing exceptional guidance and in navigating a system filled with benefits.
